Paul Motian (1931 - 2011) - The Picasso of the...
Paul Motian, a drummer, bandleader, composer and one of the most influential jazz musicians of the last 50 years, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. He was 80 and lived in Manhattan.
The cause was complications of myelodysplastic syndrome, a blood and bone-marrow disorder, said his niece, Cindy McGuirl.
Mr. Motian was a link to groups of the past that informed what jazz sounds like today. He had...

Architecture
Early-twentieth century Modernism greatly transformed our lives, liberating the human spirit from untold decoration. No longer needing to draw attention from God, all aristocratic attempts at ostentation have fallen away. At last we avail ourselves of mechanical aids far beyond our human powers, attaining the freedom to shape things at will. I decided to trace the beginnings of our age via...

Popeye Camera: Four Corners Edition
Once upon a time a small camera company looked at a Black slim camera and wished it could be the color of the sky. Carefully mixing the cyan into their molds, they emerged with one of the rarest ultra wide and slims ever created, the Popeye camera. Within months the production run was sold out to buyers in Asia. But 150 of these cameras had slight imperfections, and only the most perfect...

Art attack in Washington: Gauguin had it coming
Martha Richler: The ‘art vandal’ Susan Burns had good reason to be angered by Gauguin’s soft porn
Earlier this week, a woman named and shamed as Susan Burns entered the National Gallery in Washington DC and attacked with her fists a priceless Gauguin painting of two nudes - you know, one of the many he churned out in Tahiti. She’s been labeled a...

Ghosts
“I arrived in Ndutu only days after a huge bush fire had ripped through the area, burning down a vast number of majestic acacia trees. You could smell ash and cinders in the air. The destructive power of these fires is immense. I found many empty, whitened tortoise shells and saw disorientated impala and dik-dik wandering around with nowhere to hide. And then, a cheetah appeared on the...

I Am A Camera
King of the Paparazzi
Ron Galella has been called a “creep,” a “parasite” and a “stalker.” These are just a few of the litany of insults hurled by the talking heads in “Smash His Camera,” a new documentary about the preeminent American paparazzo.
The film gets its title courtesy of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who allegedly ordered her Secret Service agent to do just that after...
